Planned & Current works on Dunball Roundabout: March 2025
Progress
Initial works by Centregreat on behalf of Somerset Council are nearing completion on the western side of the A38, with McDonalds to the left, running northbound to the current roundabout and entrance into Dunball Wharf. The road has been realigned with new kerbing, new upgraded drainage systems, associated utility works, ducting and improved street lighting are now in place. A temporary footpath has been created along these works as well as a temporary bus stop. Resurfacing in this area will take place in the coming weeks and the new footpath and combined cycle way will becompleted running alongside these works.
In addition, ducting works have been carried out across the A39 carriageway exit/entry to the roundabout and this central carriageway has been excavated enabling new drainage and ducting to be installed whilst utilising the Variogard safety barrier system that has also been installed. A new footpath is currently being created in the island between the Shell forecourt and the island adjacent to McDonalds. This will have pedestrian lights installed in due course as part of the works. Once the works are completed close to McDonalds, works will then focus on the central reservation parallel to these works in order to accommodate new pedestrian crossings including new kerbing, ducting
and utility works.
Once works are completed, an additional traffic filter lane at the Northbound A38 Roundaboutapproach, a new widened shared usage Footway / Cycleway, and new controlled crossing pedestrian points that will form part of the overall Dunball scheme.
Community Engagement
On the 28th of February we welcomed construction students from Taunton and Bridgwater College (recently awarded ‘outstanding’ by OFSTED) onto our site at Dunball. Our colleagues were able to impart their wealth of knowledge and experience to these students all eager to learn. We would also like to thank the contributions from Puriton Parish Council, Pawlett Parish council and Somerset Local Community Networks (LCN) during visits and updates by our PLO Syed Shah.
Traffic Management
Traffic Management requirements for the current works on the A38, will continue to utilise a section of the current Lane 1 northbound from Bridgwater to the Dunball Roundabout, this is to ensure the safety of the workforce and the public and also improves work efficiencies. Traffic flows in Lane 2 northbound will be maintained at all times.
Night-time road closures (1930 – 0500 hrs) are planned to take place on the A39 between the Dunball roundabout and the M5 roundabout on Thursday the 3rd of April, Friday the 4th of April and Monday the 7th of April.
In order to improve the flow of traffic and support local businesses, additional signage has been used: ‘When queuing use both lanes’ ‘Merge in turn’ and ‘Businesses open as usual’ Please note that the next phase of works and associated traffic management will be emailed in newsletter 3 in the week commencing the 14th April 2025.
