Planned and Current works on the Dunball Roundabout scheme:
20th December 2024 – January 2025:
Progress
The ongoing works by Centregreat on behalf of Somerset Council up until Christmas and into the new year are on the western side of the A38, with McDonalds to the left, running northbound to the current Roundabout and entrance into Dunball Wharf close to Brookridge Timber. These works consist of realigned road kerbing to cater for the third new lane, new upgraded drainage systems, extensive associated utility works, ducting and improved street lighting. A temporary wider footpath has been created along these works as well as a temporary bus stop.
The majority of the underground works have been installed and the area is being prepared for the new combined drainage kerbs, footpath and new road surfaces. New carriageway construction kerbing and the new road surface finishes are planned to commence at the beginning of January 2024. Works will progress Northwards level with the Shell garage on the Western side to the North side of the roundabout close to the footway entrance into Costa Coffee on the A38.
Critical Works to the Eastern A39 side of the site have also recently been installed including duct crossings across the A39.
From 6th January 2025 works will also commence on the A39 link road from the M5 J23 to the Dunball Roundabout. The majority of these works will be undertaken on night shifts in order to minimise disruption under specialised traffic management using a single lane running from 1930hrs to 0500hrs.
Traffic Management
Over the Christmas Shutdown period from 1700hrs on 20th December 2024 to 0700hrs on the 6th of January 2025, traffic management will be minimised and the two traffic lanes temporarily restored Northbound on the A38 adjacent to McDonalds towards the roundabout.
Traffic Management requirements for works from Monday 6th January will consist of a section of the current Lane 1 northbound from Bridgwater to the Dunball Roundabout utilised as part of the works area, with lane 2 northbound open at all times. We will again utilise the ‘when queuing use both lanes’ ‘merge in turn’ and ‘businesses open usual’ signage along this stretch in conjunction with the works area.
Narrow lanes and metal safety protection barriers (Varioguard barriers) will be installed during w/c 6th January 2025 on the A39 link Road from Dunabll roundabout to J23 of the M5. This will provide safety protection to the works required in the central reservation whilst maintaining two lanes during the day times. These two lanes will be reduced to 1 lane in each direction overnight during the works from 1930hrs to 0500hrs.
